about

This is the second collection of recordings from the island of Vis, Croatia, including two summers from 2020 to 2021, focusing on the town of Komiža, its beaches and random local happening.

Again, these thirteen recordings (in total timing of more then 3 hours), act as a documentary presentation of spaces and places - but they also offer an intimate immersion into the everlasting clash of the sea and the land. The everchanging and yet hypnotically pulsating waves. The slow and almost deliberate movement of the Sea Body and its currents.

All that combined with the sounds of the island life: mesmerizing rhythms of cicadas - random people and local events - boat ports waking up early in the morning - seagull calls and dog barks - and even the sounds of boats that quite suddenly and unintentionally become an abstract voice in the orchestration of a summer day in Komiža.

✪✪✪

The title of album comes from theory that Komiža might got its name by combining "Issa" (old greek name for town of Vis) and adding "Com" (old greek for 'next to') thus Com Issa, Komiža. Title is also a play of words - Issa com Issa, Vis next to Vis - one Vis that random tourists see, and one Vis that is within local people and within island's own time-space.

Technical notes: For traveling purposes, Zoom H2n with MS/XY configuration 96hz/24bit was used. Nature of the sound of waves is tricky as it can get recorded with heavy phase issues and it doesn't take postproduction that well also. Careful stereo and mid-side corrections were done to ensure the natural experience of ambience as much as possible.

And then there are cicadas - while publishing untouched recordings is great, the laser-sharp high-pitch (8khz to 13khz) can really pierce your ears - so they were surpressed just enough to allow listener to still enjoy the imaginery place for a longer period of time.

All random conversations were checked with Croatian-speaking people to ensure no personal details were involved.
